  • Spend a Day at the Pier

    Posted by admin | June 24, 2011 | No Comments » |

Navy Pier is Chicago’s top tourist attraction. The 3,300-foot structure is a prominent aspect of the Chicago waterfront, offering food and entertainment options galore. If it has been a while since you last visited Navy Pier (or have never visited), this summer is a great time to take a day and explore.

Pier Park is located on the upper deck and features the pier’s most prominent attraction: the 150-foot Ferris wheel. The Ferris wheel offers great views of the Chicago skyline during its relaxing ride to the top. During the summer, you’ll likely catch a cool breeze from the lake as you ascend. Near the Ferris wheel is a whimsical musical carousel and an old-fashioned swing called the “wave swinger”. The wave swinger swiftly flies its 48 riders through the air, providing a thrill as well as an elevated view of Pier Park. Also in Pier Park, you’ll find an 18-hole miniature golf course and remote control boats.

Kids will enjoy the Chicago Children’s Museum, which contains three floors of things to explore. Through September, the museum is featuring a “Forts” exhibit, where kids can use materials to build, tear down, and rebuild their own forts. Children will also enjoy the Amazing Chicago funhouse maze.

Families can rent bikes and skates for touring the pier and Chicago. Guided bike tours are available. Navy Pier is also the place to find Chicago’s only Segway-authorized tour organization. Segway tours take you on a lakefront journey that begins at the pier. Once back at the pier, grown-ups can enjoy the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. There are 150 beautiful windows portraying various themes.

There is a selection of boat tours and cruises departing from Navy Pier. The Tall Ship Windy is a four-masted schooner that provides a relaxing view of the Chicago skyline. The Seadog speedboats also offer lakefront tours, but at a much faster pace. Seadog hosts Chicago River architectural tours as well. Shoreline Sightseeing is another company that provides Skyline and architectural tours. For a change of pace, check out one of the pier’s dinner cruises. The Spirit of Chicago, The Odyssey, and Mystic Blue Cruises all offer climate-controlled excursions featuring great views, food, and entertainment. Private charters are available.

There is no shortage of food options on the pier. For a quick bite to eat, there is a food court with hot dogs, hamburgers, deli sandwiches, juice, coffee, and snacks. Navy Pier also offers a diverse group of restaurants, where you can find casual, family dining or quiet, romantic ambiance. During the summer, you’ll also find food vendors outside on Dock Street—plus, the Navy Pier Beer Garden is open.

Navy Pier shops offer toys, games, gifts, apparel, accessories, and souvenirs. Spend some time wandering amongst the dozens of interesting stores. Debating which day to visit? On Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer, you can catch the free fireworks show at night. It’s a great end to a full day at the pier before heading back to the suburbs or across Lake Shore Drive to your Chicago luxury condo.

The 2011 edition of the Taste of Chicago takes place June 24 through July 3. As usual, the festival will be held in Grant Park, the front yard of downtown Chicago real estate. Admission is free and there are nearly 60 establishments offering food. Each vendor will present six items, two of which will be small, tasting portions priced at or under $2. The food will be diverse and delicious, so deciding what to fill up on will be the hardest decision of the day. Here are some highlights:

At the Taste of Chicago, they will be offering four jerk wings with rice, blackened tilapia with rice, jerk lamb chop with rice, and curry vegetable stir fry. Pegasus

Stop by Pegasus if you are in the mood for Greek food. This Greektown establishment will be serving up gyros, Greek chicken on pita, loukaneko (Greek sausage), and soutzoukia (Greek meatball). Tasting portions will be of the loukaneko (Greek sausage) and baklava.

    Texas De Brazil

This Brazilian steakhouse is the place to go if you are craving meat. They will be serving a combo platter of garlic-marinated Picanha, Brazilian sausage, and chicken breast wrapped in bacon. Their smaller portions will be a quinoa salad and Brazilian sausage (or chicken) wrapped in bacon.

    Vee-Vee’s African Restaurant

Vee-Vee’s will be serving up a unique menu of West African fare. You’ll find a fried plantain with sautéed goat meat, red beans and rice with grilled jerk chicken, jollof rice with sautéed goat meat, and red beans and rice with fried plantain. Chicago Latin Music Day (June 24), Gospel Music Day (June 26), Celtic Music Day (June 29), and Country Music Day (July 1). Additionally, the Illinois Lottery Taste Stage will showcase local artists throughout each day. For a complete list of each day’s musical entertainment, see the Taste of Chicago 2011 site.

    Other Details

Family-friendly activities will take place at the Family Village, where there will be a playground, chef’s demonstrations, activities, games, face painting, and crafts. • Coast at Lakeshore East Breaks Ground

    Posted by admin | June 21, 2011 | No Comments » |

Magellan Development Group has broken ground for the eighth high-rise tower at the 28-acre Lakeshore East neighborhood a block north of Millennium Park.

Named Coast at Lakeshore East to highlight the nautical theme of the community, the sleek 45-story rental tower will stand at 345 E. Wacker Drive, directly east of the Swissotel at the northwest corner of Lakeshore East. The tower is designed by the highly-acclaimed architectural firm of Brininstool Kerwin & Lynch (BKL)

Magellan and its equity partner, JP Morgan Asset Management, have invested over $50 million in equity in Coast tower together with borrowing $99 million from Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. to finance the structure, reports Magellan President David Carlins.

Carlins also announced that McHugh Construction Co., which has constructed six buildings at Lakeshore East, is the general contractor for the new tower.

Coast will contain 499 apartments, 18,000 square feet of retail space, a 272-car parking facility and 18,000-square-feet of indoor and outdoor amenities that include an outdoor pool and landscaped deck, a fully-equipped fitness center, resident lounge, business center, media room, an indoor spa area and other features yet to be announced.   First occupancy is targeted for February 2013.

Coast’s modern design is described by BKL as a composition of light and translucency.  A curtain wall on the east and west facades is a combination of translucent and fritted glass combined with aluminum while continuous inset balconies on the north and south elevations provide extraordinary views of the Chicago skyline, Lake Michigan and Grant/Millennium Parks.

“Our successful experience with the internationally acclaimed Aqua at Lakeshore East – a project that has thrived in a difficult market – reinforces our belief that going forward, high-quality design must remain a critical factor in our business plan.” said Carlins.

America’s debut of the first upper-upscale Radisson Blu hotel, the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, Chicago, is scheduled to make its U.S. premiere at Lakeshore East in November 2011.

The hotel will occupy 18 floors of the of the 87-story mixed-use hotel, residential, and retail, high-rise Aqua tower, recently proclaimed “Skyscraper of the Year” by Emporis, the international building database. The hotel will feature world-class meeting and event space, both indoor and outdoor, on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the tower.

Addressing the USD 125 million joint venture between Magellan Development Group and Carlson, Thorsten Kirschke, chief operating officer, Carlson Hotels, and president, Carlson Hotels, America, noted “This landmark building in Chicago is the contemporary debut of the first Radisson Blu hotel in the United States. Our Radisson Blu hotels are well established in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and are expanding in Asia Pacific, and we are looking forward to delivering this highly stylish, yet functional, contemporary hotel experience that genuinely resonates with the needs of today’s travelers to the U.S.”

Carlson is based in Minnetonka, Minn., and encompasses more than 1,070 hotels in 77 countries, including more than 660 hotels in the Americas.

The Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, which completes the stunning and universally hailed Aqua tower designed by internationally acclaimed, environmentally conscious architect, Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects, will be a full-service facility and will feature 334 guest rooms and suites, some with balconies, 27,000 square feet of total meeting space, including a 12,500-square-foot ballroom with 20-foot-high windows overlooking The Park at Lakeshore East, and extensive outdoor space ideal for social and business events, providing an urban resort oasis setting. Dining facilities include Filini, a contemporary Italian 150-seat restaurant and bar.

Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel guests will have access to more diverse amenities than in any major city, indoors and out including an extraordinary 80,000-square-foot green roof and recreation deck featuring luxury gardens, gazebos, swimming pools and cabanas, a hot tub, 1/5 mile running/walking trail, a fire pit and grills. Building amenities include an 8,000 square foot state-of-the-art fitness and spa facility featuring hot tubs, sauna, steam and massage room, an indoor lap pool, two private party suites with catering kitchens, a media room, a billiards and game area and a full-service business center.

Striking, fashion-inspired guest room interiors are being created by internationally noted Swedish hospitality designer Christian Lundwall, who has been designing hotel rooms across Europe, the Middle East and Africa since the 1980s.

The Radisson Blu Aqua room portfolio includes 203 kings, 131 Queen/Queens, 15 king suites, two Lakeshore and Millennium Park suites and the imperial two-bedroom Aqua Presidential Suite.

The hotel will feature two of the brand’s new room styles, Naturally Cool and Mansion House, designed to elevate the guest experience to an unparalleled level. Each is unique in palette and inspiration; each is equally impressive in its sense of design, quality and functionality. The most contemporary of the styles is described as Naturally Cool, featuring splashes of color, a soft sensual white bed, metal lamps, wood flooring and dramatic paper art versatile enough for any setting or climate.

The Mansion House design is defined by sophisticated strong lines, deep rich timber finishes, flashes of chrome and stunning turquoise complemented by a powerful use of artwork that presents a “dark but clubby” aura.  This room style is simultaneously contemporary and avant garde.

The hotel will offer Business Class By Radisson®, a brand service developed to provide guests upgraded amenities and services.  There are two floors exclusively designed for Business Class guests.  Business Class guests will enjoy the full use of a 17th floor hospitality lounge with complimentary breakfast and evening cocktails among a number of special perks.
