Girl and the Goat
Saveur – “America’s best new restaurant”
Girl and the Goat has occupied a spot on Randolph Street in the West Loop for just over a year. Executive Chef Stephanie Izard gained national fame with her first place finish during the fourth season of Top Chef. Running with the momentum generated by her win, she opened small-plates restaurant Girl and the Goat, where many ingredients are sourced from local farms. The restaurant is open daily for dinner and features fresh-baked bread, seafood dishes such as sautéed Hawaiian sunfish, meat entrees such as wood oven roasted pig face, and vegetarian options such as squash blossom rangoons. As you’d expect, there is also a selection of goat dishes available, like goat carpaccio and goat legs. If you don’t have reservations, expect a long wait. Arriving when the doors open (4:30) is your best bet for snagging a table quickly.
Bistronomic
Chicago Magazine – “Best New Restaurant 2011”
Located on the Gold Coast, Bistronomic is a French restaurant led by Chef Martial Noguier. You’ll find a nice selection of small plates for sharing as well as full-size entrees. Brunch, lunch, and dinner are served daily. For dinner, try Bistronomic’s renowned charcuterie or flights of cheese to start. Entree highlights include the tartine of the day, oxtail ravioli, and pan roasted duck magret. Reservations accepted.
Lillie’s Q
Food & Wine – one of the “Best New Barbecue Restaurants”
Chef Charlie McKenna opened Lillie’s Q in July of last year. Since then, this restaurant has become a top destination for barbecue in Chicago. Chef McKenna has won acclaim on the competitive BBQ circuit, and his Bucktown eatery offers a solid selection of classics such as the tri-tip sandwich, baby back ribs, and shrimp & grits. Reservations are not accepted, but if your large party provides a couple of days’ notice, Lillie’s Q will prepare a whole hog for your dinner.
Chicago Cut
CBS Chicago – “Best of Chicago”
Chicago Cut is making a big splash in the high-end steakhouse scene. Its North LaSalle Street location is prime downtown Chicago real estate, and has become an instant hit for power lunches. Chicago Prime also distinguishes itself by offering breakfast, which is uncommon for a steakhouse. Diners love the open indoor atmosphere and the two levels of outdoor seating. Also drawing praise is the service, quality of food, and iPad-based wine menu. For dinner, most eyes will wander to the selection of dry-aged, USDA Prime steaks, which includes a bone-in filet, Delmonico, and Chateaubriand.

prasino opened its third area location last month in Wicker Park. With a name derived from the Greek word for “green”, prasino emphasizes locally-sourced ingredients, organic produce, and eco-friendly architecture. This establishment is open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Features include a selection of kombuchas, sodas, juices, and smoothies, as well as items such as lobster stuffed avocado and grilled fish tacos. Reservations are accepted.

Chicago’s fall foliage typically is at its most vibrant in mid-October. Just outside your Chicago luxury condo, public parks provide a calming and colorful respite against the backdrop of the city. Chicagoans are also within striking distance of some spectacular autumn landscapes that lie outside the city. Here are your best bets for enjoying the transition from summer to fall:
North Branch Trail
The North Branch Trail is a Class I bicycle trail that begins at Devon and Caldwell Avenues in northwestern Cook County. The trail traces the north branch of the Chicago River for 20 miles, through wildlife-filled forests, golf courses, and open fields, remaining mostly isolated from suburbia’s traffic and noise. Fall colors are everywhere thanks to the variety and abundance of vegetation. Most of the trail is paved, and the unpaved portions are well-kept.
Chicago Botanic Garden
The North Branch Trail terminates at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Lake County, another great place to take in the autumn atmosphere. The garden is open year-round and fall is a wonderful time to take in the nearly 400 acres of natural landscapes. There are 24 display gardens to explore, many of which will be awash in fall color during October. From September 30th to October 2nd, the garden will host its annual Fall Bulb Festival. At the festival, local vendors offer a variety of seasonal food and drink. There are plenty of fall family activities, such as live music and a straw bale maze. There will be 242 types of bulbs for sale this year.
Morton Arboretum
For viewing the Chicago area’s fall colors, there may be no better place than Morton Arboretum in Lisle. This outdoor museum has 16 miles of hiking trails winding through 1,700 acres of gardens and nature preserves. This is truly a place where you can surround yourself in autumn’s display for hours. The arboretum’s two-month-long AutumnFest has already started. AutumnFest features theater hikes, bird walks, gourd art demonstrations, and a glass pumpkin patch. In October, there will also be taffy apples, kettle corn, and wine to enjoy.
Kettle Moraine State Forest
Located in southeastern Wisconsin, Kettle Moraine State Forest is named after its most prominent feature: a large moraine (accumulation of glacial debris) that is dotted with kettles (shallow bodies of water) of varying sizes and shapes. The forest is divided into five units and stretches out over 100 miles. There are many opportunities to enjoy the fresh fall air at Kettle Moraine—hiking, boating, fishing, and biking are just some ideas. You might also enjoy embarking upon all or part of the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive, which traverses all five units over its 115-mile course. From downtown Chicago, Kettle Moraine State Forest is about a two-hour drive.

Magellan Development Group Announces Grand Opening of the Village Market at Lakeshore East
The highly-anticipated Village Market retail center bordering the Lakeshore East neighborhood on the New Eastside is opening on Tuesday, Oct. 4 with the debut of the bi-level Mariano’s Fresh Market. The second anchor tenant, III Forks Steakhouse, has scheduled its grand opening for Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Situated at 333 Benton Place near the southwest corner of the 28-acre award-winning community, the four-story, 105,000-square-foot Village Market is also accessible from Randolph Street east of Blue Cross-Blue Shield headquarters at Columbus Drive. Magellan Development Group and Hanwha Engineering & Construction are joint-venture development partners on the project. The Village Market was designed for Silver LEED certification by Loewenberg Architects and built by McHugh Construction.
“We consider Village Market, which includes a variety of shops, restaurants and services, an enormous convenience not only for people living and working at Lakeshore East but also for our residential and commercial neighbors,” said David Carlins, president of Lakeshore East developer Magellan Development Group. “We view this as a significant step forward to achieving our vision of Lakeshore East as a diversified village in the heart of the city.”
The 55,000-square-foot bi-level Mariano’s supermarket, opening at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, is making its debut in downtown Chicago. It was developed by Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. and named for its chairman, Robert Mariano.
Roundy’s is a leading grocer in the Midwest with nearly $4 billion in sales and 20,000 employees. Founded in Milwaukee in 1872, it operates more than 150 retail grocery stores in Wisconsin and Minnesota as well as an expanding chain of Mariano’s Fresh Markets.
Opening on Wednesday, Oct.5 is Chicago’s first upscale III Forks Prime Steakhouse restaurant, part of a successful operation currently in Austin and Dallas in Texas and Jacksonville and Palm Beach in Florida. III Forks Prime Steakhouse will occupy 13,000 square feet and will provide a venue for private parties and special events as well as dining. It features a variety of seafood and beef dishes ranging from thick signature cuts of USDA Prime Beef to ocean-fresh fish, buttery lobster and a variety of other dishes. III Forks also has an outdoor terrace that overlooks the award-winning six-acre Park at Lakeshore East.
A variety of Village Market tenants preparing for a 2012 opening include Maison A Brasserie, Eggy’s, and Cuticle Nail Salon.
Other retail tenants at Lakeshore East include a 12,000-square-foot CVS/pharmacy that anchors a 37,000-thousand square-foot retail component on the ground level of the unique mixed-use 87-story Aqua tower, a Caffe Rom located at The Shoreham apartment tower and a Fifth Third Bank is also situated in The Shoreham.
Lakeshore East currently includes nine buildings, including eight completed and occupied residential buildings. The roster includes the 29-story Lancaster, the community’s first condominium building with 209 residences; The Shoreham, a 46-story apartment tower with 548 residences and The Regatta, a 44-story condominium building with 325 units; The Chandler; a 35-story condominium building with 304 residences; 340 on the Park, a 62-story condominium building with 344 residences; the 51-story The Tides, the community’s second rental property with 608 residences, the 87-story Aqua, winner of both a prestigious 2011 Prix d’Excellence design award and 2009 Emporis International Skyscraper of the Year award and the first high-rise in the city designed uniquely to combine condominiums, rental apartments, townhomes, hotel and retail spaces, and The Benton Place Parkhomes, an enclave of 25 gracious townhomes. Coast at Lakeshore East, the community’s fourth rental tower, is now under construction with planned opening of February 2013.

Besides creating a vibrant new neighborhood at Lakeshore East, Magellan Development Group is helping put a dent in the current soft-job environment.
“The key to economic recovery is job creation, and I’m pleased with our contribution,” said Joel M. Carlins, co-CEO of master developer Magellan Development Group.
According to Carlins, the growing 28-acre, $4 billion development rising on the New Eastside near the confluence of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan is providing well over 1,000 new job opportunities.
Three new projects currently underway are generating the new jobs directly as well as creating ‘collateral’ job opportunities,
The first two tenants sharing early October grand openings of the Village Market retail center at 333 E. Benton Place – Mariano’s Fresh Market and III Forks Prime Steakhouse – are generating at least 650 jobs, reports Carlins.
From cake decorators to meat cutters and a team of 16 managers Mariano’s, a development of Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc., will employ some 450 full-time and part-time workers in its 55,000-square-foot bi-level supermarket.
Another Village Market anchor opening its doors is Chicago’s first upscale III Forks Prime Steakhouse that will occupy 13,000 square feet of the 105,000-square-foot facility and engage a staff in excess of 100.
Two other restaurants preparing for 2012 openings, Maison Brasserie Moderne and Eggy’s breakfast café will provide jobs for dozens more.
“We’ll have more restaurants, shops and service operations at the Village Market that will certainly provide work for many more who are likely to be among the working population who are jobless and looking for work,” said Carlins.
Another significant job-generator at Lakeshore East is the Radisson Blu hotel that is making its North American debut in the mixed-use Aqua tower. Adding one more component to the internationally-acclaimed Aqua, a Jeanne Gang Architects design, the Radisson Blu Aqua is expected to employ a staff of 200 when it opens this fall. Radisson Blu will offer 334 guest rooms, meeting facilities and a Filini Italian restaurant and bar.
Magellan recently broke ground for its eighth high-rise, Coast, a 45-story rental tower designed by the highly-acclaimed architectural firm of Brininstool Kerwin & Lynch (BKL) at 345 E. Wacker Drive. Coast will contain 499 apartments, 18,000 square feet of retail space, including, in all likelihood, a restaurant similar to the III Forks Prime Steakhouse, a 272-car parking facility and substantial indoor and outdoor amenities.
These include an outdoor pool and landscaped deck, a fully-equipped fitness center, resident lounge, business center, media room, an indoor spa area and other features yet to be announced. First occupancy is targeted for February 2013.
“We can count 250 on-site construction jobs for the general contractor, McHugh Construction Co. That’s what I mean by direct construction jobs. How many more indirect jobs attributable to manufacturing all of the building materials, including the glass, flooring, electrical system, plumbing components and all the other pieces that make up a skyscraper like Coast is not a number that’s easy to pin down. Then you add the domino effect of all the scores of people involved in the manufacturing, sales and distribution of the furniture, kitchen appliances and accessories going into those 499 residences and I have to think that runs in to the hundreds of ‘collateral’ jobs,” continued Carlins. Another job-creating dimension of the additions to Lakeshore East is outside services like marketing and advertising that are generated.
Lakeshore East, winner of numerous international planning and design awards, is seen as a preview of the future, a mixed-use development where people can live, work, shop, eat and pursue whatever interests them without having to get into a car. The plan that completes the ambitious Illinois Center development allows for the construction of up to 4,950 residences, a magnificent 6-acre public park, 2.2 million gross square feet of commercial space, up to 1,500 hotel rooms and 770,000 square feet of retail space.
Residential developments at Lakeshore East, is halfway to completion with eight completed and occupied buildings.

Lakeshore East, the rising downtown neighborhood resplendent with internationally-acclaimed architecture and extraordinary amenities has added a significant new dimension – a preschool.
Actually it’s CHALK Preschool that offers two-, three- or five-days a week programs for children aged two to five. It has a capacity of 50 children and has already enrolled 25 youngsters from Lakeshore East and surrounding buildings for the program that got underway on Tuesday, September 7th.
“About half of our starting enrollment – which is open at all times based on availability – comes from families living at Lakeshore East. The rest comes from other residential buildings in the neighborhood as well as children of parents who work at nearby office towers such as Blue Shield-Blue Cross Headquarters and Aon Center,” reports Angela Johnson, CHALK executive director.
She noted that enrollment is expected to increase because there is already a waiting list of children who aren’t old enough yet to begin preschool.
CHALK Preschool will initially provide three classrooms with a private entrance to The Tides at Lakeshore East luxury apartment tower at 360 E. South Water Street.
The school has two teachers with degrees in early childhood or a related field in each classroom as well as a director and assistant director all under the management of Ms. Johnson. The skilled staff provides child-centered learning activities using developmentally- and age-appropriate materials and equipment.
“Our mission is to educate young minds and facilitate the enjoyment of learning. Our teachers provide the vital inspiration for youngsters who are discovering the world around them. All activities and experiences are focused on the children as we aim to support the development of the whole child across emotional, social, physical and cognitive spectra,” Johnson explained.
The school will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. Children can be dropped off between 7:30 and 9:15 a.m. and picked up at any time.
Parents are invited to visit the CHALK Preschool at Lakeshore East for a guided tour of the facility at any time during regular business hours. Appointments are not necessary.

Fall is the time to step out of your Chicago luxury condo and make your way onto the campus of your favorite Chicago university for a game. Autumn in Chicago has a lot to offer a college sports fan, and we have the rundown of the main events:
Football
Football is the most popular fall sport to watch, and Chicago’s universities have a lot to offer. The Wildcats of Northwestern kick things off the first weekend of September with an away game against Boston College. The following weekend, you can catch the Wildcats at home in Evanston as they take on the Panthers of Eastern Illinois. The Maroons of the University of Chicago start the season at home on September 3rd against Beloit. Last year, Wildcats finished the season 7-6 and the Maroons went 8-2.
Women’s Volleyball
The UIC Flames won their season opener and are coming home to host the Chicagoland Challenge during the first weekend of September, where they will face DePaul. The Blue Demons just won their first match of the season after an initial loss. Also attending the Chicagoland Challenge will be Northwestern and Loyola, who will meet in the first round. The Wildcats won their first match of the season with a three-game sweep of Cal State Northridge. The Ramblers dropped their first match of the year against Ball State in Muncie on the 26th. The winners of the first matches will face one another in the Chicagoland Challenge championship match on September 3rd. The University of Chicago women’s team was ranked 25th in a preseason coaches poll. After a stretch of away matches to start the season, the Maroons open their home schedule against Carthage on September 21st.
Soccer
Men’s and women’s soccer is underway in Chicago. There will be plenty of opportunities to watch the Chicago area’s men’s soccer teams play out local rivalries. DePaul’s Blue Demons begin September with a game at home against the UIC flames. Later in the season (9/14), the Blue Demons will make the short trip to Loyola to square off against the Ramblers. On September 28th, DePaul will welcome the Northwestern Wildcats to Wish Field. Loyola travels to Northwestern in October. The Wildcats, Ramblers, and Blue Demons women’s soccer teams have also started their seasons.
Cross Country
Women’s and men’s cross country seasons are gearing up around Chicago. University of Chicago, Northwestern, Loyola, DePaul, and UIC all have women’s teams, and all but Northwestern has a men’s squad.
Tennis
College tennis is also ramping up for the fall. Northwestern is hosting a women’s invitational at the end of September and a men’s invitational toward the end of October. UIC’s women’s team will host their own event after attending the Wildcats’ invitational. DePaul hasn’t yet published its 2011 tennis schedule online.
