  • Magellan Hosts Finnish Delegation

    Posted by admin | October 18, 2011 | No Comments » |

Magellan Development Group was recently selected by the U.S. General Services Administration to host a Finland delegation touring Chicago for a presentation on the topic, “Overview of Chicago Real Estate Markets & Business Environment.”

In explaining the selection of Joel M. Carlins, Magellan co-CEO, to address the group that included Finnish public and civic government officials, developers and real estate experts, Michael Hobson of the Great Lakes GSA, explained that “having Joel represent the private sector would be perfect because of his unique point of view on the topic to be discussed.”

Joined by Magellan President David Carlins and Vice President Sean Linnane some 25 members of the delegation participated in the presentation and discussion held in a party suite of the internationally-acclaimed mixed-use Aqua tower that serves as the icon of the 28-acre Lakeshore East neighborhood being developed by Magellan.

The presentation and discussion ran about two hours and demonstrated “both intense interest and knowledge of real estate and business in general by the delegation from Finland.

“Needless to say, they were particularly interested in the background of Lakeshore East and especially Jeanne Gang’s Aqua design, which has won several international design awards, most recently the prestigious Prix d’Excellence award from FIABCI, the International Real Estate Federation of which Finland is a member.”

Rising in the heart of downtown Chicago, steps from world-class attractions Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park, Lakeshore East is believed to be the largest parcel of downtown land under development in a major U.S. city. The is $4 billion mixed-use development in the rapidly growing New Eastside incorporates all the elements of a traditional city community, a lifestyle center that includes homes, retail, recreational opportunities and amenities such as a lush 6-acre public park and a planned elementary school.

Residential developments at Lakeshore East currently include eight completed and occupied buildings. They include the 29-story Lancaster, the community’s first condominium building with 209 residences; The Shoreham, a 46-story apartment tower with 548 residences; The Regatta, a 44-story condominium building with 325 residences; The Chandler; a 35-story condominium building with 304 residences; 340 on the Park, a 62-story condominium building with 344 residences; the 51-story The Tides, the community’s second rental property with 607 residences, the 87-story Aqua, the first high-rise in the city designed uniquely to combine condominiums, rental apartments, townhomes, hotel and retail spaces, and The Benton Place Parkhomes, an enclave of 25 gracious townhomes. Coast at Lakeshore East, the community’s fourth rental tower, is now under construction with planned opening of February 2013

A diverse retail component of the community includes a Fifth Third Bank facility, Caffé Rom gourmet coffee shop, and CVS Pharmacy. The Village Market retail center, anchored by a 55,000-square-foot Mariano’s Fresh Food Market and Chicago’s first III Forks Steakhouse, recently opened.  Other restaurants headed for the market include Maison A Brasserie and Eggy’s Breakfast Café. Cuticles Nail Salon has also signed a lease.

In addition, the grand opening of the upper-upscale Radisson Blue Aqua hotel that will occupy 18 floors of the Aqua tower and also marks the North American debut for the Radisson Blu brand is scheduled for Nov. 1.
