We’ll admit it – it’s been a rough winter – polar vortexes and thundersnow have become a permanent part of our vocabulary. In fact, residents of downtown Chicago may be wondering why we even live here at all, given all the snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures.
However, if there is one thing that Chicago does better than anywhere else, it’s looking forward to spring – and taking full advantage of the warmer weather, with all sorts of events, parties, festivals, and outdoor entertainment options that make dealing with all the cold weather more than worth it.
All the festivals planned for 2014 (beginning with one of our favorites – the St. Patrick’s Day parade) should be more than enough make any resident look forward to spring. In addition, 2014 marks the 177th birthday for the city of Chicago, the 10th anniversary of Millennium Park, and the 100th birthday of Wrigley Field – so there is plenty of local lore and history to explore in the coming months, along with the accompanying celebrations. Taste of Chicago, Pride Week, the Blues Festival, and many other festivals ensure that summer 2014 in Chicago will be one to remember as well.
For the athletes amongst us, running along Lake Michigan – including the Spring Half Marathon – is one of the best parts of the spring, summer, and fall in Chicago. But of course, simply enjoying a stroll through the Park at Lakeshore East or nearby at Millenium Park is a wonderful way to celebrate the return of warmer temperatures as well. Bike the Drive is equally excellent for avid cyclists.
Even the first chance you get to enjoy simply dining al fresco can be a wonderful way to welcome the new season – and there are plenty of restaurants with excellent (and dog friendly!) patios in and around Lakeshore East.
That said, if you just want to stop hibernating in your condo, we suggest taking advantage of some of the city’s free museum days – no need to wait for summer weather to enjoy many of the amazing cultural experiences this city has to offer!
