Magellan Breaks Ground on the Village Market Center at Lakeshore East

Posted by admin | March 22, 2010 | No Comments » |

To add to the convenience of the Lakeshore East location, Magellan is proud to announce its development of the Village Market Center, a 105,000-square-foot retail center at the southwest corner of Lakeshore East.

The center, anchored by a Roundy’s Grocery store, will not only be a welcome addition to the community for local residents, it will also be a valuable addition to the green movement in Chicago. The new retail development is designed to seek silver LEED accreditation with a green roof, outdoor café and pedestrian promenades that reflect the architecture of the area.

Retail Development at Lakeshore East
We proudly broke ground on the development at the beginning of March and expect it to be completed within a year of the start of construction. McHugh Construction Company is the general contractor.

The three-story Village Market Center will house an eclectic group of tenants anchored by a 55,000-square-foot bi-level Roundy’s Supermarket, which will not only be the first tenant of the retail center, but also the first traditional grocery store in the New East Side neighborhood. Magellan Vice President of Development Brian Gordon said, “This will be an enormous convenience for people making their home at Lakeshore East and for our residential and commercial neighbors as well. We view this as a significant step forward in realizing our vision of Lakeshore East as a village within the city.”

Roundy’s Grocery in Chicago
Magellan is proud to bring Roundy’s to our New East Side neighborhood. Roundy’s is a leading grocer in the Midwest with nearly $4 billion in sales and 20,000 employees. Founded in Milwaukee in 1872, it operates 151 retail grocery stores under the Pick’n Save, Copps, Rainbow and Metro Market banners in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

It will be the first location of the grocery chain in Chicago. “We are excited about opening new stores in the city of Chicago,” said Robert Mariano, Roundy’s chairman and CEO. “We look forward to serving customers at Lakeshore East and the surrounding neighborhood.”

More Green Features of Village Market
In addition to its 15,000 square feet of un-irrigated green roof, the Village Market Center will offer numerous other green features. A few of these include:

  • A recycling program to encourage retail tenant use and education
  • Storage space for public and staff bicycles to reduce auto use
  • Preferred parking for fuel-efficient and alternative-fuel vehicles
  • All parking will be within or under the building, eliminating impervious roof surfaces that are common in surface lots and roof-occupied parking garages
  • High-efficiency window systems
  • Water-efficient plumbing fixtures
  • A location in close proximity to public transportation and bike paths, further reducing auto usage

Lakeshore East is quickly becoming one of the most convenient places to live in Chicago, and we are proud to announce the progress on this project, enhancing the convenient and eco-friendly Lakeshore East lifestyle.
