Chicago natives new and old are aware that winter brings frosty weather! While the snow can make the city beautiful and the holiday season fills Chicago with great activities that only come once a year, residents of Lakeshore East’s downtown Chicago condos are inevitably breaking out their warm clothes, cozy blankets and comfort foods that get them through the cold season.
As December goes on, downtown Chicago condo owners should also make sure they have a favorite coffee shop, tea house or café to frequent while it’s wintry outside! Whether it is a cozy neighborhood spot or a chic and modern café, having a favorite place to escape the winter wind while warming up with coffee, soup, tea or hot cocoa is essential! You can enjoy the picturesque snow and winter weather through the window while you are enjoying the comfort of your local haunt. If you are new to the neighborhood or haven’t found a favorite café, here are a few suggestions in and around the Lakeshore East community.
Caffé RoM – Lakeshore East’s own café is the Italian coffee shop, Caffé RoM. Located on the ground level of The Shoreham, the modern Italian coffee bar is perfect to stop into as you depart your Lakeshore East residence in the morning or great for an afternoon pick-me-up as you prepare for a night out in downtown Chicago. Along with classic Italian coffees, espressos and signature drinks, you can pick up authentic Italian biscotti, panini, pastries or gelato at RoM.
Tea Gschwender – For those who require lower dosages of caffeine, try Tea Gschwender on State Street. The German tea shop helps shoppers browse a seemingly endless variety of teas, smelling and tasting as you go. Helpful staff and unique flavors make this a café for the newest tea drinker or an expert steeped in tea knowledge. A warming atmosphere enhances the warming quality of the beverages, making it a perfect mid-winter escape!
Whispers Café – Located in the Triangle created by Rush, Oak and State Streets on the Near North Side, Whispers Café provides not only delicious hot beverages but also a location close to great dining, shopping and nightlife. The teeny café, which doesn’t offer tons of indoor seating, is nonetheless a great locale to grab an after-dinner espresso or mid-afternoon cappuccino to warm up during cold weather. You can combat the cold with a warm drink while people watching or trying freshly baked pastries in one of Chicago’s premier Gold Coast neighborhoods.
Café La Sera – Just north of downtown, Café La Sera in Old Town provides comfort food and drink in its only location. The independent café features Julius Meinl Austrian coffee, Ethiopian tea and breakfast, lunch and dinner service. Free wifi and a laid-back ambiance make this restaurant a great place to study, visit with friends or get out of the cold.
Pierrot Gourmet – Within the Peninsula Hotel just off Michigan Avenue, this upscale, European-style café is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the Magnificent Mile. Famous for its sandwiches, salads and desserts, it is a great place for lunch while holiday shopping, weekend brunch or a quick cup of hot coffee to help bear the cold. Excellent food compliments comforting warm beverages, and you can also sample various offerings from a comprehensive wine list. The atmosphere of the famous hotel extends to the comforting and casual café.
